Goals of the University

The goal to be achieved by Wollega University is multifarious. It works to increase the satisfaction level of concerned stakeholders by providing accessibility and equity of education, research outputs, and community services. It also works towards improved optimum diversification, generation and utilization of financial resources. It is to improve quality of students’ academic and Social Services. The university works to improve participation and transparency in service processes by promoting communication and networking with partners and community. Furthermore, it enhances reform implementation, grievance handling, legal and anticorruption activities. The university also deserves to improve infrastructure, facilities and enhance staff and leadership capacity development and retention, and improve working environment and culture.

Academic

WU Academic Vice President Office is answerable to the President

 Major function

 As a major function, the Academic Vice President at WU provides the executive leadership in assisting the President in the overall planning, organizing, and controlling of the academic programs.

 Duties and responsibilities

  • Coordinate, direct and lead, the different academic programs: graduate and undergraduate academic programs, continuing and distance education programs, academic staff affairs, office of the registrar, library, and  academic quality and assessment Directorates;
  •  Provide leadership in planning and executing  the development of programs, faculty recruitment and development, and manages  the academic initiatives;
  • Advise, assist and support the president in his endeavor to discharge his responsibilities on academic affairs;
  • Provides leadership in creating and maintaining academic standards and policies
  • Devise strategies which help to follow and ensure the implementation of policies,  plans, rules and regulations, legislation  and other guidelines governing academic  programs, academic and technical staff,  and students; 
  • Works closely and collaboratively  with other Vice Presidents for effective and efficient use of resources and manages the activities of the University’s broad academic directions/vision, priorities and  policies;
  • Supervises the deans of the colleges/Schools/Institutes at WU and the directors of Library, Academic Staff Affairs, Postgraduate and Undergraduate programs, Registrar, and Quality and Assessment Directorates, evaluating and approving their recommendations for different activities.
  • The office of AVP is responsible to  establish programs, policies, procedures, and standards in selection, evaluation, promotion and supervises staff development programs; Ensure the employment and promotion of academic staff is in consistent with the University’s rules and procedures;

School of Medicine and Health Science

The college of Medical and Health Sciences was established as a College in 2007, having three departments namely department of Nursing, department of Public Health and department of Pharmacy. In 2010 the College is then separated into Faculty of Health Sciences (under which there is department of Nursing, Midwifery and Public Health) and Faculty Medical Sciences (under which there is department of Pharmacy, Medical Laboratory Sciences, and Medicine).

Currently the college is running six undergraduate programs (Public Health Officer, Nursing, Midwifery, Pharmacy, Medical Laboratory Science and Innovative Medicine) and its first cohort three different specialty postgraduate programs (Masters of Public Health; in General Public Health, Reproductive Health and Medical Parasitological). The programs mentioned above are delivered in regular, evening and weekend basis. The programs have their own demonstration an skill laboratories. The college has colorfully graduates its third batch 356 students in 2013 G.C in the main campus, more than quadruple as compared to first and second batch graduates. There are more than 1300 regular undergraduate and 48 graduate program students in the college. 

School of Graduate Studies

Background

Wollega University is one of the public higher education institutions established at Nekemte in 2007. It is located 331 km West of Addis Ababa at the outskirt of Nekemte town on the 150 hectares of land surrounded by evergreen forest and natural scenery of landscape, and spectacular view of mount Komto.  School of graduate studies was established in 2010to run the post graduate studies in various disciplines in line with the national development objectives. At present, the University runs 19graduate programs in three different campuses at Nekemte, Gimbi and Shambu towns in different disciplines. In addition the university is planning to launch 30 masters and 7 PhD programs in 2007 E.C. academic year.
