Program offered: Masters
Master of Public Health (MPH) in Epidemiology
- Modality:Weekend & Regular
- Duration:2 years (Full-time), 3 years (Weekend)
- Credit:39 Credit hours
Admission requirements:
- Bachelor’s degree in health sciences (Public Health, Environmental Health, Nurse, Medical Laboratory, Demography, Midwifery, Health Informatics) or medical doctor
- Minimum CGPA of 2.5/4.0
- Sponsorship letter
- Statement of purpose/motivation letter
- Letters of recommendation

Programs and admission information
1.Bachelor of Science (BSc) in public health officer
- Duration of the program: Four years program
- Admission criteria:
The department needs students who:
- Have successfully complete the preparatory program
- Meet the set criteria of the higher education to join the higher learning institutions
- Be physically fit (at least the candidate should be physically healthy capable of undertaking the four techniques of diagnosis of disease in clinical medicine i.e inspection, palpation, percussion and auscultation)
- Female candidates will be encouraged
2.Master of Public Health (MPH) in General public Health with different modalities (Regular, weekend, and Summary)
- Duration of the program: for Regular program (2 years); for Weekend program (2.5 years) and for summer program (4 years)

- Academic requirements:
- Educational background: Applicants to the postgraduate for Master of Public Health in General track should have a minimum of first degree in health fields from recognized higher institutions in recognized field of studies by health authorities (Health Officer, Nursing, pharmacy, Medical Laboratory sciences, Medicine, Midwifery, Environmental Health, demography, health informatics, occupational health, Nutrition, anesthesia, physiotherapy, family health and other health fields).
- CGPA: 2.50 and above
- Entrance exam: The applicant must pass entrance examination, with minimum score of 50%. But the pass mark is subject to intake capacity of the school.
- Non- academic Requirements
- Age: To be enrolled in the program the maximum applicant’s age is 40 years.
- Work Experience: The applicant must have at least two years of work experience after obtaining the bachelor’s degree.
- Recommendation: The applicant must be supported through at least two letters of recommendation (1 from the applicant’s undergraduate instructors, 1 from the employers or professional associations).
PhD in Public health
- Duration of the program: 4 years
- Admission requirements:
- Prospective candidates must have at least a master’s degree in public health or other health science fields. The admission interview aims at evaluating the candidates' academic potential, work experience and attitudinal preparation to pursue a postgraduate program at the doctoral level.
1. The candidate must have at least one publication in peer-reviewed journals.
2. CGPA of 3 or above or its equivalent in ECTS
3. Presentation of a sound preliminary PhD proposal concept note (synopsis)
4. Willingness to participate in the University’s teaching roles
5. Official transcript of BSc, and master degree
6. Copies of the BSc and master’s degree
7. Proof of budget for conducting PhD research (signed sponsorship)
8. Recommendation letters from two referees, two of which are academicians in a related field of the candidate
9. At least one academic supervisor/advisor from the department of public Health

Program Admission Requirement (Eligibility)
- Applicants must:
Admission for post basic family health
- TVET level 4 Health Extension worker (HEW) and nurses having diploma who are working as urban health extension with COC certificate from a recognized institution
- A minimum of 2 years’ full-time service
- One recommendation letters from Regional Health Bureau (RHB) or City Administration HB
- The applicant must successfully score 50% to pass mark.
- Sponsorship letter from sponsoring government institution
Admission for postgraduate training in reproductive health sciences
- The applicants should have a minimum of first degree in health fields from recognized higher institutions in a recognized field of studies by health authorities.
- Applicants must have a minimum CGPA of 2.0 and above in the previous degree.
- The applicant must satisfactorily pass a qualifying examination (must score ≥50%).

The department of Epidemiology and Biostatistics is a cornerstone of the School of Public Health, dedicated to advancing public health through rigorous scientific inquiry and education. Our department builds upon a strong legacy, having established in 2014 as the Master of Public Health (MPH) program in Epidemiology within the Department of Public Health. To date, we have graduated over 100 MPH specialists in Epidemiology.
In a strategic enhancement, the program has been elevated to form the new department of Epidemiology and Biostatistics. The synergistic integration of these two disciplines provides a powerful, complementary foundation for public health research and practice, offering students an unparalleled, integrated educational experience.
This department has three missions: conduct innovative research, address pressing public health challenges, and teaching both undergraduate and postgraduate courses. Our distinguished department staff’s members are mentoring the next generation of public health leaders and researchers. This is evidenced by the success of our graduates, who have attained influential positions in governmental and non-governmental organizations.
Currently, the department continues to admit MPH students in Epidemiology through different modalities and currently supporting a cohort of approximately eight students. Beyond training knowledgeable and committed professionals, the department actively fulfills its duties to local, regional, and national communities, translating research into impactful public health action.
- The Department of Reproductive and Family Health at Wallaga University began in 2016 E.C as a Department within the Institute of Health Sciences, under the School of Public Health.
- The Department of Reproductive and Family Health is one of the core academic units within the Institute of Health Sciences at Wallaga University. The Department was established to advance education, research, and community service in key areas of reproductive, maternal, new-born, child, and adolescent health. Since its establishment, the Department has played a central role in training competent public health professionals equipped with the knowledge and skills to address Ethiopia’s priority health challenges.
- The Department offers high-quality teaching at undergraduate and postgraduate levels, with a curriculum that integrates theoretical knowledge, practical field experience, and research competency. Through its academic programs, the department prepares students to become leaders in reproductive health, family planning, safe motherhood, fertility and infertility care, adolescent health, gender and sexuality studies, and public health research.
- Research is a major pillar of the department’s activities. Staff and students actively engage in research addressing maternal mortality, family planning uptake, adolescent reproductive health issues, gender-based violence, and other public health concerns relevant to the region and the country.
- In addition to teaching and research, the Department of Reproductive and Family Health provides outreach services and community engagement. Through fieldwork programs, health education campaigns, and partnerships with local health institutions, the department contributes to improving reproductive and family health outcomes in surrounding communities.
