Nekemte, October 15, 2025 — In a significant move to ensure accountability and strengthen institutional performance, Wollega University (WU) held a high-level general assembly today, where the university’s vice presidents officially signed Key Performance Indicator (KPI) agreements with the President, Dr. Tesfaye Lemma. The signing took place in the presence of the WU Management Council.
Opening the assembly, Dr. Tesfaye Lemma highlighted that the KPIs were initially agreed upon between the presidents of universities and the Minister of Ministry of Education of the Federal Democratic Republic of Ethiopia at national level. He emphasized that today’s handover marks a critical step in cascading these institutional goals down to all levels of the university’s structure, ultimately reaching every staff member step by step.
"The time has come for all of us to walk the talk,” Dr. Tesfaye said. “Each of us must take full ownership of our responsibilities and work diligently to transform our university. These KPIs are not just numbers—they reflect our commitment to excellence, accountability, and service to our students and country.” The president underlined the importance of collective responsibility in realizing the university's goals. Given WU’s reliance on limited federal funding, he urged all departments and leadership teams to strengthen collaboration with international donors and partners in order to secure additional financial resources.
“We must make our cake bigger," Dr. Tesfaye stated, referring to the need for resource diversification. "Our responsibilities are growing, and so must our capacity to deliver. There will be no room for underperformance. The KPI targets must be delivered 100%." In a firm tone, Dr. Tesfaye also announced the formation of a university-level supervisory team tasked with monitoring the implementation and progress of the KPIs. He added that those who fail to meet expectations would be held accountable.
Turning attention to student outcomes, the president called for intensified efforts to support students in passing their exit examinations. On research, he urged academic staff to publish in reputable and indexed journals to elevate WU’s visibility on the international stage.
Following the president’s address, the university's vice presidents formally signed and accepted the KPI agreements. Each committed to cascading the targets to their respective units without delay and pledged to begin implementation immediately.
This landmark KPI handover signals a new chapter of results-oriented leadership at Wollega University. As the institution positions itself for growth and transformation, the message from the top is clear: performance will be closely monitored, and accountability is non-negotiable. Those who fail to meet their targets will be held responsible, while those who demonstrate excellence will significantly contribute to driving the university’s growth and transformation remaining in the pipeline. The coming months will be a test of commitment, collaboration, and collective resolve.
