Wollega University Hosts Awareness Training on Illegal Migration

Wollega University organized an awareness-creation training on illegal migration, bringing together community representatives, government institutions, religious leaders, youth, and prospective migrants to discuss one of the most pressing global challenges affecting millions of people across the world.

dr alIllegal migration has increasingly become an international phenomenon driven by a complex combination of economic, social, political, environmental, and security-related factors. While migration remains an important avenue for seeking better opportunities, unsafe and irregular migration routes often expose individuals to human trafficking, labor exploitation, gender-based violence, psychological trauma, loss of life, and violations of fundamental human rights. The challenge has become a shared concern for countries of origin, transit, and destination, requiring coordinated responses from governments, communities, educational institutions, and international partners.

Recognizing the growing significance of the issue, Wollega University hosted the training to enhance public awareness and promote informed decision-making among individuals considering migration. The program provided participants with knowledge on the causes and consequences of illegal migration, legal migration pathways, migrants’ rights and responsibilities, psychosocial challenges, and available support mechanisms for migrants and returnees.

The training featured expert presentations from multidisciplinary professionals. Dr. Alimaa Jibril, Director of Community Service, delivered a session on the social impacts of illegal migration, with particular emphasis on the vulnerabilities of women and children and the risks of gender-based violence and exploitation. Dr. Tafarraa Fayyisaa addressed the psychological and emotional consequences of irregular migration, highlighting issues such as trauma, stress, social isolation, and mental health challenges experienced by migrants and returnees.

Legal aspects of migration were presented by Mrs. Obsee Bashaa, who discussed migration laws, legal migration procedures, and the rights and protections available to migrant workers. Her presentation emphasized the importance of following legal migration channels and understanding the legal frameworks that govern international labor mobility. In addition, Mr. Bayisaa Kiisii (MA in Social Work) shared research-based insights on the causes, consequences, and possible solutions to illegal migration, underscoring the importance of awareness creation, livelihood opportunities, and community engagement in addressing migration-related challenges.tr2

Participants engaged in extensive discussions on the multidimensional nature of illegal migration and explored practical approaches to reducing its prevalence. The training emphasized that sustainable solutions require not only legal and policy interventions but also expanded economic opportunities, public awareness, social protection mechanisms, and strengthened collaboration among stakeholders at all levels.

The event reflects Wollega University's continued commitment to community service and public engagement by addressing contemporary societal challenges through awareness creation, research-informed dialogue, and capacity-building initiatives. As an institution dedicated to advancing knowledge and promoting societal transformation, the University remains actively involved in efforts that contribute to human security, informed citizenship, and sustainable development.

Through initiatives such as this training, Wollega University continues to play a vital role in educating communities about the risks associated with illegal migration while promoting safe, legal, and informed migration practices that uphold the dignity, rights, and well-being of individuals.
