Faculty of Agriculture Linkage

The Faculty of Agriculture at Shambu Campus has developed strong institutional linkages that enhance its academic, research, and community engagement roles. It maintains collaborative partnerships with national and regional agricultural research centers, such as Bako, Holeta Ambo, Mekasa, Bishoft, Batu, Sebeta, Research Centers, the Ethiopian Institute of Agricultural Research (EIAR) and Addis Ababa University Bishoftu Campus and nearby sub-centers, enabling the students’ joint educational field trips, annual research review and the sharing of improved technologies. These collaborations often involve interdisciplinary activities, where experts from various fields: plant science, animal science, and food science, agronomy, and fisheries & aquatic science work together to address complex agricultural challenges. The Faculty also engages with government industries and regional laboratories, particularly in areas like soil and water analysis, seed certification, and food safety testing, which strengthens both its teaching and practical training capacities. Additionally, partnerships with private industries, including agro-processing companies and input suppliers, support student internships, applied research, and technology transfer. These linkages serve as vital bridges between academia and real-world agricultural development, ensuring that the knowledge generated benefits local communities and supports national priorities.

The administrative role of the Faculty of Agriculture involves planning, coordinating, and overseeing academic, research, and community engagement activities across its departments. The Faculty ensures effective implementation of the university's policies, manages staff and resources, facilitates curriculum development, and supports student services. It also plays a key role in monitoring departmental performance, promoting research and innovation, fostering collaboration with stakeholders, and ensuring the timely reporting and communication of activities to higher university administration and external bodies such as the Ministry of Education.

Organizational structure of Faculty of Agriculture

The Faculty of Agriculture at Shambu Campus is organized into a structured framework that supports its core functions in teaching, research, and community service. It is led by the Dean, supported by a Vice Dean, who assists in overseeing academic and administrative activities. The Faculty comprises five active academic departments: Animal Science, Fisheries and Aquatic Science, Food and Nutritional Science, Horticulture, and Plant Sciences. Each department is headed by a Department Head responsible for coordinating departmental teaching, research, and extension programs. The Faculty also works closely with units such as the Undergraduate, Postgraduate, and Continuing Education Program (UG, PG, & CDEP) Coordination Office, and maintains strong linkages with research centers, government agencies, regional laboratories, and private industries to support interdisciplinary research, practical training, and institutional collaboration. This structure ensures smooth communication, effective management, and the delivery of high-quality agricultural education and research outputs.

Vice Dean College of Agriculture

As the Vice Dean of the Faculty of Agriculture at Shambu Campus, I am honored to support our collective mission of delivering quality agricultural education, impactful research, and meaningful community service. The Faculty has built a solid foundation in training highly competent graduates equipped with both academic knowledge and practical skills essential for addressing Ethiopia’s agricultural challenges. Our five departments Animal Science, Fisheries and Aquatic Science, Food and Nutritional Science, Horticulture, and Plant Sciences continue to demonstrate excellence in offering specialized and hands-on learning tailored to the evolving needs of the agricultural sector.

In collaboration with faculty leadership, staff, students, and stakeholders, we are actively engaged in fostering innovation and promoting sustainable agricultural practices. Our emphasis on interdisciplinary research, technology transfer, and stakeholder-driven solutions ensures that the work we do has tangible impacts on rural communities, food systems, and the environment. The Faculty of Agriculture at Shambu Campus is one of the academic units dedicated to fostering agricultural development through quality education, applied research, and community engagement. It plays a vital role in addressing food security, environmental sustainability, and rural development challenges by producing skilled graduates and conducting problem-solving research.

Currently, the Faculty comprises five active departments: the Department of Animal Science, Department of Fisheries and Aquatic Science, Department of Food and Nutritional Science, Department of Horticulture, and Department of Plant Sciences. Each department offers specialized training and practical learning opportunities tailored to the dynamic needs of Ethiopia’s agricultural sector. About Faculty of Agriculture

Wollega University (WU), a public higher education institution, was established in February 2007 in Nekemte, Oromia Region, Ethiopia, with the goal of producing competent professionals and contributing to national development through education, research, and community service.

The Faculty of Agriculture established in 2009 two years later of the main campus at Horo Guduru Wollega zone, Shambu Campus.

It is located in Shambu, a town in the Western Oromia Region, 314 km west of Finfinnee. 

  • Initial Enrollment:

The College commenced its teaching function with regular undergraduate degree students.
