The Four Day Training Program on SIMS at Wollega University
Wollega University is a young and innovative University which aspires to be one of the top 25 universities in Africa by 2033. The University is aggressively working on various changes driven initiatives for the attainment of its vision among which the use of technologies is one target area. Introducing different technologies and capacitating the staff therefore is the top priority in the University. Accordingly, it conducts four day training on Student Information Management System (SIMS) starting from 22 July 2016 (Friday) for the Deans, Vice Deans, Department Heads, Registrar Office staff, and staff of Office of Corporate Communications.
SIMS is in-house developed software, which targets in automating student related information. It is a web-based system covering from student admission up to graduation and after graduation activities in a scalable manner. It is believed that software provides data manipulation, monitoring, analysis, and reporting facilities to the appropriate users of the University.
The SIMS to be used in the University focuses on the following six different integrated components.
1. Course and Curriculum Management System
2. Academic Program Management System
3. Student Admissions, Registration and Achievement System
4. Online Grade Submission and Approval System
5. Certification and Graduation System
6. Building Management and Dormitory Placement System
The four day training focuses on enhancing knowledge, skills, and competencies of participants to utilize the software and designing overall system architecture and specifying hardware and system requirements, i.e. the data design, architectural design, and interface design, which are appropriate for Wollega University. Besides, it will improve the understanding of the participants on implementing what has been designed, i.e. converting the design into code, and testing the implementation against the requirements to make sure that the product is actually solving the needs addressed and gathered during the requirements phase. Also this program will help the participants in deploying or delivering the successfully tested product to the customer for their use.
Two parallel sessions were organized-one for the Dean, Vice Deans and Department Heads and the other for the staff from the Registrar Office. One hundred forty participants attended this important training program.
By using SIMS, Wollega University will gain a lot of benefits ranging from time and money saving to increase accountability, transparency, responsibility, task sharing and customer satisfaction.
