About the Department of Emergency and Critical Care Nursing

The Department of Emergency and Critical Care Nursing at Wallaga University, Institute of Health Sciences, School of Nursing and Midwifery, has been establishment in 2010 E.C. The department was founded in alignment with the vision and mission of Wallaga University. Emergency and Critical care nursing is a Nursing specialty within nursing that deals specifically with human responses to life-threatening problems. Emergency and critical care nurse is a licensed professional nurse who is responsible for ensuring that acutely and critically ill patients and their families receive optimal care. Emergency and Critical care nurses can be found working in a wide variety of environments and specialties, such as emergency departments and the intensive care units. 

Academic Programs

The department offers a comprehensive suite of programs that cater to different levels of professional development:

  1. Post-Basic in Emergency and Critical Care Nursing
  2. Bachelor of Science (BSc) in Emergency and Critical Care Nursing (Generic)

Program Duration

  • Post-Basic Programs: Two and a half years
  • Undergraduate Generic BSc Program: Four years

Achievements

From its foundation, the department has successfully graduated five cohorts of post-basic students. The generic undergraduate program is currently in its second year of training, with growing enrollment and demand.

Through these programs, the department continues to fulfill its mission of producing competent, compassionate, and innovative Emergency and Critical care nurses.

Overview

  • The Department of Emergency and Critical Care Nursing was established in 2010 E.C as a unit under the Institute of Health Sciences, School of Nursing and Midwifery at Wallaga University. Since its establishment, the department has been dedicated to addressing the critical shortage of professionals in Emergency and Critical Care health services by producing competent nurses who can provide preventive, curative, and rehabilitative care to critically ill patients.
  • Initially, the department launched two-and-a-half-year post-basic training programs in Emergency and Critical Care Nursing. This initiative was designed to respond to the urgent demand for specialized Emergency and Critical Care Nursing professionals across the country. Including the post-basic training programs, the department started training BSc in Emergency and Critical Care Nursing undergraduates, thereby addressing gaps in the middle level of Emergency and critical care nursing health professionals.
  • The department has maintained its commitment to Wallaga University’s vision and mission by producing highly skilled and compassionate nurses capable of serving diverse communities in Ethiopia. Training of these specialty nurses has proven to be both feasible and effective in reducing preventable emergency and critically ill patients and mortality.

Vision

Mission

☞ To produce competent emergency & critical care nursing professionals who are able to provide a wide range of emergency and critical care for patients with life-threatening illnesses and injuries.

Aim of the Program

☞ To produce competent, compassionate, innovative, and committed emergency & critical care nurses who undertake preventive, curative, and rehabilitative health services tailored to the needs of Ethiopia’s population, while meeting both present and future national priorities and international professional standards.

Objectives of the department

  • Prepare emergency & critical care nurses equipped with solid knowledge of biomedical science, clinical and public health practice
  • Prepare emergency and critical care nursing students in providing individualized patient care using the nursing processes.
  • Equip emergency and critical care nursing students on the management of patients with multiple organ failure using the existing scientific knowledge
  • Equip emergency and critical care nursing students on the establishment and strengthening of emergency medical services system
  • enable emergency and critical care nursing students practice in a professional manner on all level of emergency and critical care setting
  • Train emergency and critical care nursing in developing professional communication skill in dealing with patients’ family and other health professionals
  • Prepare the emergency and critical care nursing students participate in conducting and utilizing relevant research findings
  • Train emergency and critical care nursing students to apply evidence-based nursing practice for patients
  • Train the emergency and critical care nursing in practical skills based on theoretical foundation
  • Equip the students with leadership and management skills
  • Equip students with critical thinking and decision-making skills which lead to reflective and responsible practice

Program Admission Requirement (Eligibility)

  • Applicants must:
    • Have a natural science background
    • Meet the Ministry of Education criteria for entry into degree-level programs.
    • Be physically fit, capable of undertaking essential clinical diagnostic techniques (inspection, palpation, percussion, auscultation), and free from hearing impairments.
    • Female candidates are strongly encouraged to apply.
