It is among the newest departments in the faculty as well as in the university. The program is specifically designed to alleviate the existing problems in terms of scarcity of skilled manpower in the areas of fisheries development and management, fish handling and processing, aquaculture development, wetland management, limnology and water quality assessments, management of pollutants and invasive weeds, lakeshore development and management, entrepreneurship and business management skills.

Vision

The vision of the Department is to become a full-fledged Center of Excellence in the field of Fisheries and Aquatic Science that would put the University to be one of the top African Universities in Agriculture with World Wide recognitions.

Mission

The mission of the department is to producing skilled manpower in the field of Fisheries and Aquatic Science and conduct problem solver research in the demand-driven area.

Objectives of the program

The objective of this program is to contribute to the human capacity development for optimum utilization of Fisheries and Aquatic resources through sustainable utilization, conservation and management.

 Professional profile

A professional in Fisheries and Aquatic Sciences is expected to work as:

  • Researchers on fisheries, aquaculture, aquatic and wetland sciences
  • Assistants on fisheries, aquaculture aquatic and wetland sciences at universities, colleges and scientific institutions
  • Consults in fisheries and aquatic resources management in developing policies
  • Experts on fish stick assessment, harvesting, processing and handling technologies
  • Practitioners on aquaculture production systems, fish feed and breeding technologies
  • Experts in environment, wetlands and water quality management
  • Entrepreneurs in aquaculture, fisheries, Aquatic and wetland resources
Program profile

The department provides a comprehensive four-year Bachelor's degree program in Fisheries and Aquatic Sciences. This program is designed to equip students with a robust understanding of aquatic ecosystems and fisheries management. It encompasses a total of 259 ECTS and 149 credit hours, which reflects the workload and learning outcomes expected from students throughout their studies. Besides, the program includes 57 courses. These courses cover various aspects of fisheries science, aquatic biology, and environmental management, preparing graduates for successful careers in this vital field

Program and Admission Information of Department of Animal Science

All detail information about the programs

Bachelor of Science (BSc) Degree Program

1.      Background of the program

Ethiopia has the largest livestock population in Africa and the fifth largest in the world. This huge animal resource, however, makes a disproportionately small contribution to national income, especially export income, and to national food production. Ethiopia has a huge potential for development of the dairy industry. Some of the indicators of the country’s potential for the development of the dairy sector include the large livestock population; the high demand for milk and milk products in the country due to the increasing human population, increased rate of urbanization and the expected increase in real income of the consumers; and the diverse climatic and topographic conditions that the country possesses. Despite this big potential, the dairy industry in the country is underdeveloped and the annual milk production is not sufficient to feed the current human population.

The key challenges that undermine the performance and potential of the livestock sectors include reduced availability and access to communal grazing and natural pasture; insufficient access to forage, forage seeds, and feed supply; poor animal health due to disease prevalence; and low livestock genetic make-up. Limited adoption of improved livestock practices and poor provision of livestock support services are major sources of low productivity levels.

To combat the challenges facing the wide livestock producers and the livestock sector of the country, Animal Sciences program is crucial to produce professionals, scientists and experts that can educate, do research and transfer technologies for solving animal production constraints including feed related issues, poor animal genetic resources, and animal health problems. The contribution of the program is for education sectors, livestock research institutes, Ministry of Agriculture, governmental and non-governmental organizations, private sectors and industries.

1.1.Vision of the program

The Animal Science program has a venerable vision to have proven competence in animal science training, research and extension by producing highly competent and skilled professionals in the areas of the livestock sector and conducting multidisciplinary research which is innovative, result oriented and demand driven.

1.2. Mission of the program

The mission of Animal Science program is to offer training of high caliber, practically oriented, competent and responsive professionals in the fields of animal sciences with integrated, applied and problem-solving research and extension services.
