Wollega University has been developed a Research and Community Service Policy and has been executing its activities according to the preset premises. In 2013/2005 E.C budget year, Wollega University has completed one research works, and executing 44 research proposals among which many of them are expected to be completed at the end of this academic year. And in the process of implementing five research projects, of which one research project is sponsored by international collaborating organizations. The main sources of budget for the research project are from the University’s internal revenue and allocated budget by Ministry of Education. The University is also seeking other sources of funds through developing research projects and inviting local and international stakeholders to sponsor such projects. Hence, we are looking for interested stakeholders to participate in our activities and sponsor the University’s research projects in the future. Furthermore, Wollega University publishes its official international Science, Technology, and Arts Research (STAR) Journal quarterly and organizes at least one symposium and University level research review annually. One of the major functions of the Wollega University is the development and transmission of knowledge and skills through research. For this Wollega University empowers the RECO to promote and to make financial provisions by creating linkages with funding agencies, to create facilities for a global centre of research excellence within the University.
In order to achieve its mandate in research and extension, Wollega University through this Research Policy will enable its staff and students to make full use of its limited resources to create a research culture consistent with National development.
School of Veterinary Medicine is one of the Schools found in the University. It has shown phenomenal growth in just half a decade of its establishment. It has demonstrated tremendous capability in producing competent graduates in various undergraduate programs. Although the School has shown dramatic changes under the current administration of Medical and Health Sciences, it is still below the expected capacity.

§ The Mission of Wollega University, School of Veterinary Medicine is to develop a diverse academic community that advance scholarly activity. Also it provides the best learning environment to prepare students to become members and leaders of the worldwide animal health care through research and knowledge exchange. School of Veterinary Medicine extended to the public for the benefit of animal and human health to meet the changing needs of Ethiopia and the world.
§ To provide effective veterinary manpower and expertise, and take part in the improvement and upholding of animal and human health, and wellbeing through veterinary education focusing on practical oriented training and undergoing applied research in the field of veterinary medicine and animal science.
§ To manage the health and disease of animals as well as to ensure the safety of foods and it focuses extensively on the whole chain of food production from farm to table as well as on the high standard treatment of individual animals and in a herd or population bases.

Specifically, the mission of the School is:
v To provide an education program leading to the attainment of the Doctor of Veterinary Medicine degree, Veterinary Laboratory Technology and Bachelor of veterinary Science. The educational programs were designed to ensure those students:
ü Acquire a basic understanding of structure, function, and disease processes in a variety of animal species.
ü Acquire skills in the diagnosis, treatment, and prevention of animal diseases.
ü Develop problem-solving abilities.
ü Acquire the ability to communicate effectively with clients and colleagues.
ü Acquire the skills and attitudes necessary for continued growth and development.
v To promote research on animal health and disease, and related activities.
v To disseminate relevant information through publications, newsletters, Cooperative Extension Service facilities, and other suitable channels.
v To provide an educational program for veterinary technologists.
v To support the goals of Wollega University by extending teaching, research, and service where appropriate to university programs and activities outside the College of Veterinary Medicine.
Program Profile
Currently, the School of Veterinary Medicine at Wollega University has three programs. These include Veterinary Medicine (DVM), Bachelor of Veterinary Science and Veterinary Laboratory Technology (VLT). The School also proposes to launch graduate programmes in Veterinary Epidemiology, Animal health and production and public tropical and infectious disease.
Wollega University Library and Documentation Service were set up in January 2007. The main goal of the Library is to back the university to achieve its goal of research-based, student-centered teaching-learning task and knowledge transfer. The Library is located in the main campus, Nekemte. It gives 24/7 full library, Internet and information service to 30,000 student population and more than 600 faculties.
The Library’s specific purpose is to help the parent organization conduct its teaching-learning, research, and publication activities through providing information, reference, research, Current Awareness Service (CAS), Selective Dissemination of Information (SDI), recreation and reading services.
Departments of the Library
WUL, which is run by about 186 library staff, is departmentalized to give library, information and documentation service to its patrons as the following.
New Building of Wollega University Library
Acquisition and cataloging section: to adopt book selection policy, to select books, ask and prepare library budget, place purchase order, receive (acquire), accession new books, catalog new books upon arrival, prepare the card catalog or book format catalog or computerized catalog and display for public access, etc.
Circulation Section: Circulation Section handles the Front Desk operations of the library and is very important because it is the first contact point for faculty and users to the library.
Efficiently functioning Circulation Desk leaves a lasting impression on the user and hence it is very important section of the library. Major Activities of the Section are:
Classification Section: to classify all information resources using DDC classification scheme, to assign book Call No and give book label, to prepare shelf guide list and arrange books according to the classification scheme on the shelf, etc.
Binding and Documentation Section: to give reprographic service such as photocopying, duplicating scarce documents, to bind, to mend damaged books, and bind paper copy books with hardcover to extend books’ life, and other documentation tasks.
Bookstore section: to receive and organize books, to keep inventory control of all books and related information materials, to shelf and preserve books, to distribute books to the concerned branch libraries and departments, etc.
Reference Section: to give readers’ advisory service to users on how to use the library, to answer reference questions, to display new arrivals, to arrange dictionaries, encyclopedias, almanacs, yearbooks, maps , atlases, gazetteers, to give library orientations and instructions to the users, to give current awareness service (CAS) and selective dissemination of information (SDI) to its special users, etc.
Periodical Section: to subscribe to government and private newspapers, to prepare and display newspapers, magazines, journals, serials; to organize and display periodical publications on various subjects and current issues, etc.
ICT Section: to give computer service, INTERNET and email service, to assist and give consultancy service on how to use and exploit other electronic information media of the library, assist and advise how to browse the web for educational sites, etc.
E-Library Section: to give electronic books service, to log into different university libraries over the INTERNET, etc
Administration section: to plan, manage and coordinate the overall library works; to direct and evaluate the works being done; to supervise and lead the library as well as prepare reports to concerned body to achieve the stated goal of the University.
