About the Department

DEPARTMENT OF SPORTS STUDIES

Introduction

The Department of sports studies has dedicated itself in the growth of the Oromia region and Ethiopian nationals through molding the young citizens by means of building a strong mind and develop best physique through sports activities. Sports is a learning experience, offers a unique opportunity for problem – solving and self-expression and socialization. A well implemented, comprehensive programmer is an essential component to the growth of both mind and body. To achieve the set objectives, the Department of Sport Studies was established in 2000 E.C under the name of “Department of Physical Education and Sport” in the Faculty of Education at Wallaga University. Since 2004 E.C the department began to give training for Bachelor of Science in sport Management, 2008 E.C. MSc in football coaching and Bachelor of Science in sport Coaching program. By 2009 E. C MED in Teaching Physical Education has been started.  Department of Sport Studies has serving not only in academic areas but also engage in research and community service by organizing and participating in the Ethiopian Public Universities Sports Festival and performed in a competitive sports and games. The department plays a major role in organizing, intra-mural, zonal, regional competitions and academic conferences. In academic concerns the department function collaboratively with various sports science department in nation and abroad specifically with Beijing sports university, China.  Currently the department have additionally two projects: Volleyball and World Teakwando.

Vision;

To serve as a Centre of Excellence for training the Sportsperson in various sports and games. Enhance the knowledge and competencies of our students to empower them to become leaders in the region and national.

Mission

To equip students to be suitable for employment in any part of the Globe, to impart Practical and research based quality education, to in-still in students a desire and confidence to become entrepreneurs in their chosen field of sports science, coaching and management

 To prepare highly competent and skilled researchers and teachers in the field of Sports and to serve the society
