About the department of Mathematics

Introduction about the department

The departmental roots go back to the turn of the last 18 years when it originally was the Department of Computational Mathematics. The Department of Mathematics became an independent department in the College of Natural and Computational Sciences on July 1, 2007 G.C, with Dr. Boka Kumsa its first head of the department. In October of 2014, Prof. Phani Kumar authorized the creation of the Post-graduate (PhD) programs that function and operate within the graduate school.Since its creation, the department has preserved advanced, disseminated applied mathematical knowledge. Today the department hosts a vibrant community of scholars dedicated to conducting world-class interdisciplinary research in the numerical Analysis, Optimization, fluid dynamics, Graph Theory and Mathematical modeling in ecology and epidemiology.  We currently have some 24 full time instructors, more than 50 graduate students carrying out the research and teaching missions of the department.

Mission:

The mission of the Department of Applied Mathematics is the creation, discovery, and dissemination of applied mathematics on a broad front”.Our department engages in research in a range of areas from applied and algorithmic problems to the study of fundamental mathematical questions. By its nature, our work is and always has been inter-and multi-disciplinary. Among the research areas represented in the division are numerical analysis, graph theory and algorithms, mathematical modeling, dynamical systems and partial differential equations, optimal control theory and fluid dynamics. To further mathematical research the department is committed to the following:

  • Recruiting faculty with well-defined research programs who demonstrate either a promise or a record of quality results.
  • Providing the faculty with the time, freedom, resources, and support staff needed to do research.
  • Encouraging mathematicians from around the world to visit the Wollega University to interact with our faculty and students.

Vision:

"To be a global leader in advancing the application of mathematical principles to solve real-world challenges, inspiring innovation, and fostering interdisciplinary collaboration to address the evolving needs of science, industry, and society."
